Pioneering New Service Supporting People Affected by Cancer Across The Lothians

26th June 2022

Macmillan Cancer Support is investing £2.8m across Edinburgh and the Lothians to introduce the Improving the Cancer Journey programme which will provide seamless, accessible and personal support for people affected by cancer.  Improving the Cancer Journey ensures people affected by cancer across the Lothians are offered emotional, practical and financial support by making just one phone call.

We have Link workers in each local authority area who provide support for a range of non-medical issues related to having a diagnosis of cancer.  An appointment with an Improving the Cancer Journey Link worker gives the person time to talk through their concerns and helps them access a wide range of support, from benefits advice and emotional support to help at home or with other practical needs.

‘Karen a carer for her father who has cancer was referred to the service for support to manage her current family situation and work-related stress.  Support from ICJ helped her develop self-management tools to manage her anxiety and she attended Thistle’s mindfulness course online.  She said that the support enabled her to talk through how she was feeling and start to do more of what was helping.  Since support Karen felt she was coping better and was planning her return to work.’

‘Jane was diagnosed with cancer four years ago.  She had finished treatment but was feeling lost and anxious and felt she needed someone to talk to. She hoped to feel more herself again, ‘to be able to get up in the mornings and recognise what is important to me’.  Jane says support from ICJ has helped her to understand herself and come up with an action plan for moving forwards.  ‘Cancer shakes you up and everything changes so being able to talk to someone in the context of my illness has helped me the most.’

Appointments with the Link workers can be by phone, online or face to face.
