MELCC finalist Saltire Hospitality once again diversify in a quest for success

30th July 2020

Celebrating 20 years in business is a significant achievement for any business owner. Whether it be a multi-million-pound organisation or a small independent business, more often than not longevity is the aim of any business venture.

MELCC are proud to declare our valued member Saltire Hospitality has reached this monumental milestone in 2020.   In what should be a celebratory year for this family owned company has turned into a period of severe uncertainty due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

With many industries suffering as a result of COVID-19 it seems the hospitality industry is one of the worst affected with events such as weddings and conferences unable to take place due to a fear of the virus spreading further.

Offering a multitude of services to the public, not least servicing large-scale events including weddings and live outdoor events such as The Royal Highland Show and the Scottish Game Fair, Saltire Hospitality have thankfully been able to adapt and pivot in recent months in an attempt to survive and indeed recover from the crisis.

Satire Patisserie To You launched in June allowing the general public to purchase and enjoy tasty treats in the comfort of their own homes. From strawberry tarts and steak pies their offering has been well received from their ever-growing list of clients.

In addition to the success of Saltire Patisserie to You, Saltire also saw an opportunity to offer coffee, cakes and more from one of their outdoor catering trailers within Cockenzie House & Gardens in East Lothian.  Having serviced Cadell’s Café within Cockenzie House since 2016, Saltire were devastated by the café’s closure at the end of March.  With a fleet of cafés under the Café’s by Saltire brand the company also saw all 8 other cafés close for an unforeseen period of time. In recent weeks, however, when government guidelines eased, Saltire grabbed what they considered to be a golden opportunity given that the 17th century house is located within a stunning and spacious walled garden.   Since June the trailer has been a welcome addition to the garden attracting people from East Lothian as well as Edinburgh and Midlothian in recent weeks.

Just this week Saltire have announced that Cadell’s Café is set to reopen on Monday 3rd August. A full menu offering will resume and the necessary safety measures will be implemented in keeping with government guidelines.  Due to its popularity outside seating will remain an option for those who wish to sit within the spacious grounds surrounding the house.

A finalist in the Best Café/Tea Room of the Year category for MELCC’s 2020 Food and Drink Awards, Saltire are taking things to the next level by introducing their first ever Pizza and Wine night at Cadell’s Café on Wednesday 5th August.  Always aiming to please their loyal customers and the local community in Cockenzie, Port Seton and the surrounding areas, Saltire see this as a natural progression in terms of what they can offer as a leading Scottish catering company.  Depending on its success the Italian themed evening will potentially become a weekly fixture in August and beyond.

The idea to diversify and operate as a restaurant ties in with Saltire’s decision to make the most of the Government scheme, “EAT OUT TO HELP OUT”.  As per the recent government announcement diners in the UK will get a 50% discount off their bill during the month of August in an effort to bolster the embattled hospitality sector.  The ‘eat out to help out’ scheme unveiled the discount as part of a series of measures to restart the economy amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The “eat out to help out” offer (up to £10 per head) can be redeemed from Monday – Wednesday within all Saltire cafés across Edinburgh during the month of August.  With some of Saltire’s café’s set to reopen in the coming weeks and with others already now in operation, the Saltire team are looking forward to welcoming both regular and new faces for some scrumptious food and outstanding service.

Times of late have taught us to expect the unexpected.  Unexpected situations lead to change and more often than not people don’t like change.  Over the last few months, Saltire like many, have had no choice but to adapt their business offering.  Their ability to adapt and their successes over the last few months come as no surprise however.  No company can remain a leading service provider without willingly adapting to social and economic factors over a 20-year period.  Based on their recent success stories I know MELCC for one look forward to the next creative catering concept for Saltire Hospitality.

MELCC is about supporting eachother in our business ventures.  We’ve booked our table on the 5th August……have you?
