First Aid for Mental Health Course

21st August 2024

On 18th September 2024, we will be once again providing a First Aid for Mental Health course, which will provide course participants with a First Aid Awards Level 2 Award in First Aid for Mental Health, recognised at SCQF Level 5.

This will be followed by a 20 minute assessment on Thursday 19th September 2024.

As we all know, mental health is a rising concern, with 1 in 4 people experiencing a mental health condition each year, and at least 1 in 6 employees experiencing mental health problems in the workplace.  Research has shown that work is the biggest cause of stress, which can stop people performing at their best, and that up to 1/3 of resignations occur due to perceived levels of stress experienced at work.   As a result, providing support to people who are experiencing issues with their mental health, and providing them with a means to have a discussion is not only a legal requirement*, morally right, but is beneficial for your business too.

*(The HSE L74 Guidance to the Health and Safety  (First Aid) Regulations have recently been updated to include an emphasis on your responsibilities as an employer to take account of employees’ mental health in your first-aid needs assessment.)

Mental health conditions are often hidden due to stigma and fear of discrimination and research has shown that a culture of fear and silence around mental health is costly to employers

This qualification provides course participants with the knowledge to recognise a range of mental health conditions, covers how to start a supportive conversation and when and how to signpost a person to seek appropriate professional help.

By the end of the course participants will know how to recognise and manage stress and understand the impact of substance abuse. They will learn about the first aid action plan for mental health, be able to put it in place and know how to implement a positive mental health culture in the workplace.

Course participants will not diagnose or treat mental health conditions as this can only be carried out by healthcare professionals, but this course will help them to identify early warning sings in someone, and hopefully help prevent this worsening, through discussion and signposting sources of support and assistance.

This course will be delivered online, via Zoom, by Gwen, over a 7 hour period on 18th September 2024.  There will be a 20 minute follow up call after the course to consider learning and thoughts (arranged on 19th September 2024).

We offered this course already this year and received very positive feedback on both the course content and Gwen, our course facilitator, who has a fabulous way of explaining the difficulties that someone may be experiencing and how we can offer support.

The cost of the course is £199 per person (+VAT), and you will receive a course certificate and a manual.

There are 20 spaces available on this course. Please get intouch The HR & HS Dept  for more details and booking please email Ciara.McGovern@hrdept.co.uk
